Pictures of New Orleans, March 2006 Houses in the 9th Ward Here are some pictures of houses in the upper 9th ward. Keep in mind that these are just a few examples of houses in "good" structural condition. Many houses in the neighborhood have signs posted on them saying "We Will Rebuild." Some houses also have "For Sale" signs on them. Most are uninhabitable and some people (if they are extremely lucky) live in trailers nearby. The 9th ward is one of our country's biggest (predominately) African American neighborhood in which the residents still own their homes. Down in the lower 9th (near the levee) it is much worse. Houses were knocked completely off their foundations, roofs ended up blocks away, and toxic garbage gives little room to even walk. I didn't make it down to the lower 9th (because of time constraints and honest fear of the sheer destruction). Some girls from Memphis I roomed with went down for a few hours and came back in shock. (They said the saw city workers who just discovered another body. This is March, 2006, five months after Katrina hit.)
Many houses have things spray painted on them to let rescue workers know that the house has been inspected for survivors, victims and pets. This one says "Dog w/ Owner" amongst other things.
The sign on the front of this house says this: "Attention! Neighbors of my community. The reason my house is on the blighted list because the S.W.B. failed to comply with the judge order to fix all the broken sewage lines. (signed) Francisco Rico"
Blue tarp is used to try and protect the house from the elements. This photo was taken on a windy day.
A hopeful sign nailed to Jazzy Po-Boys says: "Chef Kevin back to reopen soon"
A broken tree.
