Pictures of New Orleans, March 2006

Our Adventures in New Orleans

Here are a few pictures from adventures Shayna and I had. Good friends recommended we go to Donna's for some live classic New Orleans jazz music. The band we saw was great (lots of local famous musicians showed up to play) and small crowd showed up. Charlie, the owner of Donna's was quite a guy as well! Rumor has it he makes some wicked red beans & rice on Mondays.

This is Oswald, Charlie's old friend. His part in the band is to dance in front of the stage with an umbrella. He's 65 and I'm not kidding, he did a cartwheel. I almost thought he was going to start breakdancing.

The next night we went to Elizabeth's for dinner, a homestyle restaurant in Bywater (one of the most integrated New Orleans neighborhoods). We had some delicious food; fried green tomatoes & a shrimp po-boy bigger than my head. Upstairs is an old-fashioned homey bar room. The bartender was great- a musician himself- and we played jukebox bebop session ( a game in which each person in the room gets to pick a song). Blondie, Bruce Springsteen, the Velvet Underground and lots of New Orleans bands whose names I wish I could remember now.

Sho-nuff hot sauce at Elizabeths!

written in chalk on the top stair of Elizabeth's: "If you are reading this, watch yo step"

Lastly, a picture of Shayna taking a picture of busted up gas pumps in the 9th ward.
