excerpted from the introduction: In March 2006, I went down to New Orleans for the first time in my life. I was there to volunteer with my friend Shayna Cohen at the Common Ground Relief Effort. Interested in moving beyond the news coverage of Hurricane Katrina, I witnessed the damages to a city I never knew. My experience took me a little off guard. How could so much beauty, hope, corruption, and sheer devastation exist with such intensity all at once? Even more so, how did I fall in love with this smelly, hot, toxic place that embodies Stories Care Forgot? I guess those who love New Orleans know that in good times or bad times, for better or for worse, once you fall in love, it's awfully hard to fall out. Sidewalk #4 is dedicated to the superheroes of Mardi Gras 2006. Those who stand, crouch, watch, and protect after the party is over. These superheroes wear their beads with pride; they know they have an important job to do.
