5-5-06 Check it out, two interesting Seattle presses:
5-29-06 Not only do soy dogs tast terrible and have a funny texture, they melt when grilled. Lesson learned: stick to the real stuff, it's worth it.
5-20-06 So I was camping out on Whidbey Island this weekend, turned the corner into a small town main street and was greeted by this:
5-10-06 Today I visited the Bellevue Art Museum for the Thomas Mann exhibit about Hurricane Katrina. It was incredible; really beautiful and powerful stuff. If you're in theSeattle area you should check it out before it blows away.
I just finished Sidewalk #4: Superheroes 5-3-06 My friend Duggers at Common Ground came up with this idea for a protest on the white house. I think it might actually work if the idea took hold. The problem with protests: They're great for one day when all the excitement goes down and then cause can lose public momentum The solution: Have a protest for a widely accepted common cause (impeach Bush?) outside of the White House. Instead of having it for one day, one week or one month, it lasts forever until the common goal is achieved. The next problem: Sure that sounds like a good idea, but let's be honest things like that tend to die out when the weather is hot/cold/rainy/sunny and activists become crabby and tired of feeling alone in their cause. The best part: Instead of it being a regular old protest, it should be a birthday party protest. An ongoing birthday party in front of the White House to Impeach Bush. People arrive in DC to celebrate their birthday with a gigantic birthday party in front of the white house with a gigantic group of people who share your birthday and their friends. hula hoops, games, music, whatever and whoever wants to show up and have a birthday party! Think about it... 2006 birthday could potentially be the best party of your life! Why it might work: We all have a birthday. We all have 1/2 birthdays too... (feel free to pass this idea along... all it takes is a
little circulation)
5-1-06 The march for Immigration Rights today was huge! It was really inspiring, but I have to admit the march was eeriely quiet here in Seattle. (Especially compared to the festive one a few weeks ago.) It seemed intentional but I'm not sure why? Here's my favorite signs of the day:
4-30-06 It's great when you have a major influx of delicious books to feast on: The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman 4-25-06 My friend Russell happened to catch the 9th ward marching
band this past march at Mardi Gras. Quintron and Miss Pussycat are behind
it: http://www.quintronandmisspussycat.com/marchingband.html
4-13-06 Check it out, the Common
Ground Kids & Community Website is up and running! Eugene Yurstev
did an amazing job bringing it to life. Also you can read about the summer
program they're running! Well, it's a sad time in Seattle for zinesters, independent
bookstores and indie media fans in general. Brad Beshaw has announced
that Confounded books will be closing its doors forever at the end of
April. (Not to worry Wall of Sound fans, they will graciously expand to
fill the space.) This is the end of the best zine and comics shop in Seattle!
I think that in a town that traditionally values it's indie bookstores,
record shops & coffeeshops, this really says something. Amazon lives
in our neighborhood folks! We cannot shop there for ALL of our books if
we value independent bookstores. I know...the bargains are so hard to
resist, but we will lose book shops. Is this a price we're willing to
pay? On a lighter note, I will be coloring Brad Beshaw's comic
for the next issue of Rivet magazine! 4-10-06 It was amazing to see the protest today coming through the international district of Seattle. It was HUGE. The next protest is scheduled for Monday May 1st. Anyone want to walk with me? Now if we can just convince Catholics that abortion is not a political issue this could be the beginning of the people's movement! (I believe that Christians are mistaken when they chose to vote for/against a politican based on abortion. The right to choice is very different from the right to life. If you truly are pro-life you can work towards your goals by spending all of your energy on supporting life by giving women support centers if they chose to have a baby. Imagine if all the pro-lifers spent all of their time and money on women's health centers, preventative education and child care support. They might actually save a few lives! (Versus wasting their time trying to take away the political right for woment to choose.) The
New York Times Magazine ran an horrifying article this week on abortion
in El Salvador (where it is illegal to have an abortion. Women are subject
to complete criminalization and live in fear.) 4-9-06 I went on my first scooter rally this weekend with my friend Annie, her scooter club: the Belladonnas, and the Cretins. I got to say even though, the Honda Elite trailed in the back (behind slick vespas & vintage racer biker) it was really fun. We went up around Leschi & Seaward Park and ended up in Georgetown for breakfast. Also it was the debut of the Dr. Dre bumper sticker! (From Dre Day 2005 (an annual birthday party for Dr. Dre in Minneapolis, given to me by Mike 2600, the guy who puts the whole thing together!)
