9-26-06 Last week, the worst happened. I killed my computer. With one hefty job to the printer (from Quark operating on OS9- I know bad idea), my little iBook G4 froze and never revived. Luckily, I was able to salvage all of my files, however I lost all of my e-mail addresses & previous e-mails ... so this means that I have no way to contact you unless you write me an e-mail at rachel@eaten-alive.com. So please, please, please, write me! just to say hi and so I have your e-mail again! ps. Also, Mike Stuntz, if you read this I'd really love to get in touch with you again about the NOLA photography book! 9-18-06 For some reason the change of season seems to bring a glut of great reading & viewing. I've recently decided that NOTHING is better that discovering an amazing writer and then realizing they have 15 of their books waiting to be devoured in the Seattle Public Library (God bless the SPL!). In this case, Andre Codrescu's latest book of essays, "New Orleans: Mon Amour" knocked my socks off! Other great things lately: Little Miss Sunshine (I don't care what the critics say, I was laughing so hard I cried, literally), the NYTimes magazine's article on Michel Gondry and excitement for his upcoming movie, The Science of Sleep and I recently discovered "Fishing With John" an absurd fishing show with guests like Jim Jarmusch & Tom Waits. 9-15-06 Imagine this: It's late Friday night in downtown Seattle. My housemates & I leave the Nitelight (best dive bar in downtown, great jukebox) and pile into the car. Meghan turns to us in the back seat and exclaims, "We should listen to Greg's favorite shower-signing song!" and puts on John Denver's Country Roads. We immediately start to sign along and then notice that the SUV in front to of us is from West Virginia. (For those of us who like to butcher lyrics, the song goes "Country Roads take me home, to the place I belong, West Virginia, Mountain Momma, take me home country roads...") So Greg (the driver) pulls up alongside the SUV, windows roll down, stereo turns up EVEN LOUDER and we begin to sing to the car beside us. The W. Virginians were confused at first, no doubt. A guy pulled off his hat and pointed: "West Virginia", we creeped up Pike street singing and they joined in. At one point, the girl hanging out the back seat window mouthed to us, "I LOVE YOU!". 9-11-06 We spent the day today out at Kurtwood Farms on Vashon Island and it was amazing! The farm is run by Kurt and Joel. They have sheep, cows, hogs, geese, ducks, bees and tons of fresh vegetables. They made us dinner using ingredients only from the farm (sans flour, sugar, salt & pepper). Highlights included: lamb & duck offal, home-made ravioli, and a tomato upside-down cake. After dinner games of red rover, freeze tag & wheelbarrow races ensued! 3 not-so-little pigs: Only a thin wire of electricity between us... Joel & Adam make homemade pasta in the cookhouse: Speaking of food, this month's Nation magazine is the food issue. There are lots of great articles about sustainable farming, government and corporate farming. 9-7-06 So... my 3-week trip to NOLA has changed! Here's my new itinerary: Oct. 11-18th: Milwaukee & Chicago So, I'm actually super-excited about it! Halloween & Day of the Dead/All Saints Day in NOLA, a wedding in Memphis, visits with friends & family in Milwaukee & Chicago! Plus I'm going to take Amtrak from NOLA to Memphis. It's supposed to be a pretty historic ride. I've never been to the deep south before... should be interesting to say the very least. My for-sure stops: Woodland Pattern bookstore Write me or call me if you have suggestions or better yet,
if you're going to be in the same neighborhood those dates. 8-27-06 So to mark the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina I'm
releasing my latest book, Matchstick Forest. It's a matchbook with tear
out pages that are meant to be burnt as a way to express empathy and mourning
for the victims of the hurricane. Each page has an image of a tree on
it, a poem and a match. Here is an image of a burning page: A funny thing happened today. I've been scheming on how
I can get back to New Orleans this fall, but I wasn't sure how it was
going to work, since I have a job. And today my boss asked when I was
headed back down there and so... now I have 3 weeks leave from my job!
I'll be down there from October 11- November 2. Funny how things like
that work out. Just 20 minutes outside of Seattle is the town of North
Bend, made famous by the legendary tv show, Twin Peaks. It's pure suburbia
on the drive out there, but North Bend is actually a charming little town.
Here is Tweed's cafe (AKA The Double R):
