You're Scaring Myself Too!

Horray! Annie Olechowski just released her second zine, You're Scaring Myself Too! (And it's rumored that the final zine in the triology, You're Scaring Meself, will be St. Patrick's Day themed.) Check it out:

Good bye New Orleans; Hello Seattle

Well, now that I'm back in Seattle I've immediately begun romanticizing New Orleans (it doesn't help that I just picked up this amazing book, photos of Storyville "ladies of the evening" by Bellocq circa 1920's). Anyway, I think my friend Scott wrote it best in an e-mail:

"Keep romanticizing and be aware there's a lot more to experience here than one can soak up in just a couple of weeks. You've but scratched the surface on the seedy underbelly of America's red headed step child and semi-forgotten third world city. That is usually enough to plant the seed of longing and wonder that will inevitably bring your clicking heels doin' a' second line boogie on back here. When you're ready, you know how to find me for the continuation tour. It starts every day somewhere between the hours of noon, and midnight. Until then just imagine all the good stuff you're missing out on."

Man oh man! It's hard to believe that the trip is over! I guess I'll just have to start plotting the next time I can make it down...

new orleans October 2006

So, after a long-delayed-in-Minneapolis flight home, I'm finally back in Seattle! It feels good to be back (even though it's been raining non-stop) and I'm super stoked to get back into the studio and start working on books and graduate school applications... I've decided to take the GRE also which should be pretty funny since I haven't done math since high school.

Halloween in New Orleans

Needless to say Halloween in NO was pretty wild everywhere. Frenchman street was a sea of monsters, beauties, beasts, and strange inanimate objects. Music poured out everywhere and strange sights were abundant. Occasionally a policeman on horse would bob above the revelers in the street. Here are just a few of the interesting things going on throughout the night!

There was gigantic clap trap percussion "cart" parked in the middle of the street:

floating skeleton puppets:

and this guys was breathing fire (actually really close to some electrical wires and lots of people):

Memphis: The Black Lodge & the Pyramid

We discovered the Black Lodge really does exist! (This video store in Memphis has an awesome selection of films! Second best only to "the mothership" Scarecrow in Seattle of course.)

Here's a pic of the glittering Pyramid of Memphis... apparently one of Brandon's friends is getting married in that thing which sounds hilarious...

New Orleans Arrival & St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

I arrived in New Orleans yesterday to my lovely spot in the Marigny neighborhood and 80 degree/full humidity weather. Today I wandering around and stopped in at St. Louis Cemetery No.1 (of Easy Rider fame). Check out the massive above ground tombs:

Massive Change at The Contemporary in Chicago

Today I finally visited the Massive Change exhibit at the Contemporary Museum of Art in Chicago. The project was done by Bruce Mau & The Institute Without Boundaries and it focused on a lot sustainable design. I thought the exhibit was pertinent and well done but extremely optimistic. I guess we'll see if any of these ideas can really take off on "massive" scale (especially in places where smart plans for urban density, waste-free sustainable design is needed).

Here's a picture of an "image room":

Eaten Alive Books in Milwaukee & Quimby's in Chicago

Now you find Eaten Alive books at the world famous Quimby's in Chicago!
I've also restocked at Woodland Pattern Books in Milwaukee!

After School Matters Chicago

Today my friend Keri gave me a tour of the amazing non-profit after-school arts education program, After School Matters. We visited their school right downtown and it was truly incredible. High school students were completely engaged in many classes: weaving, clay, culinary, dance, spoken word and the facilities were practically collegiate. It truly is a model for city's everywhere to aspire to.

Los Straightjackets & the Tacoma Museum of Glass

1. I saw Lost Straightjackets last night for the first time and they rocked! The Pontani Sisters were also dancing with them. Wrestling masks + surf rock = good times. The crowd was pretty uptight (typical Seattle I guess...) But can you believe that those guys will play 3 nights in a row at the Potawatami Casino in Green Bay regularly? And I know drunken casino goers like to dance.

2. Today Brandon & I visited Jonas at the Tacoma Glass Museum! It was super cool to hang out near the heat of the ovens and dress up like space robots:

Plus the Joyce J. Scott show up was really great. It was my first experience seeing her work (although I recognized some of her torn paper work from the Wash. U. collection) and I thought it was really interesting, especially the beadwork and prints. Definitely someone worth looking up especially if you want to incorporate more women artists into your repertoire.

3. Jonas took us to the Pickwick Burger stand in Fife and it was pretty amazing. Inside of this tiny season burger stand, there are like 5 old ladies in there frying up burgers and shaky the shakes. The burgers are delicious (even better than a Dick's deluxe) and they have a small field behind the stand with picnic tables and lots of hanging plants.

4. We shopped on the "Antique Row" on Broadway (in downtown Tacoma) and found this jewel: Junior Bizarre. They had super affordable CUTE stuff. I got a jacket & tights ($14) and brandon got a shirt & jacket ($12). Plus the owner was really sweet and they sell ice cream.

ART LIFE 3: Sugar Skulls & Silkscreening

Last night at ART LIFE 3 (an art collective hosted by Annie & Danielle) we decorated sugar skulls for Day of the Dead and learned how to silkscreen home-style. Check it out:

Bare bones, bare bones gonna walk around

The result (mine is the top middle one with bone teeth) yee-ahh...

AND we ate Ezell's fried chicken out of Jonas' glass chicken bucket.
It doesn't get much better than this.
